The day before / The day after – Ukranian artists exhibited at The Bakery, 24th February – 5th March

Artist-run gallery The Bakery will be showcasing and celebrating the work of contemporary Ukrainian artists – currently living both in Ukraine and abroad – from 24th February to 5th March 2023 in an exhibition titled “The day before / The day after”. 24th February marks the one-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion; on 23rd February 2022, the day before the war started, these artists were going about their lives and making art to reflect this. The artists’ work spans different media, styles, and influences, but all pick up on a common hope for the future – that one day there will be a “day after.”

The show captures different perspectives on Ukrainian life and different interpretations of the country’s culture. Media includes drawing, painting, mixed media, and printmaking, and styles range from abstract to representational.

The exhibition will feature 20 different artists, from emerging artists to those in mid-career. All profits from the show will go directly to the artists.

The artists featured in the exhibition include:

  • Karina Kucherenko
  • Leonid Tomlin
  • Maksym Mazur
  • Maksim Rybalko
  • Nomeda Ciurlionyte
  • Valentyna Kuzmichova
  • Ruslana Klyuchko

About The Bakery

The Bakery is a new artist-run gallery that is based in a 19th-century bakery on the iconic Portobello Road. The gallery creates a new way for artists and their audiences to connect, making contemporary artwork accessible to everyone and providing a friendly space for artists to share their work. There are ten member artists who put on a rolling exhibition of current work, curated by the artists themselves, as well as frequent week-long solo and small group shows by visiting artists.

The Bakery is always manned by one of the artists, so it’s possible to have a conversation with a practising artist about the work on display whenever you stop by!

The goal of The Bakery is to creat an accessible way for artists to interact with the public and to allow the public to discover new artists and engage with contemporary art today.
