Lawson Wood Upholstery – New upholstery workshop-style showroom on All Saints Road

Newly opened on All Saints Road is Lawson Wood Upholstery – the wonderful workshop-style showroom of the long-established bespoke furniture design company.

Their new showroom enables the company to offer its bespoke services to the public as well as to interior design professionals, with examples of work on show that demonstrate how their pieces are made. Each commission they receive is made to order from an initial concept or idea, whether that’s a chair, sofa from their own collection or an idea grown from an image in a magazine. Because of the bespoke nature of their work, their upholsterers take the time to personally build each piece using their extensive knowledge and experience whilst also incorporating their clients’ ideas. With a large selection of fabrics to sample at the showroom and accounts at all the main fabric houses, Lawson Wood Upholstery can source wonderful and unique fabrics to complete the final look of any item they make.

About Lawson Wood Upholstery

Lawson Wood Upholstery has been making furniture of the interior industry since 1948, and they’ve worked exclusively with interior designers for many years, making furniture for a very wide range of projects – from stately homes to stunning London penthouses, beach huts in Whitstable and everything else in between.

In May 2021, Amy, Mark and Pavlos took over the company and are excited to announce that they’re working on new designs and ideas that they will launch in the showroom. Their first new concept is “The Sofa Fit”, which has been been designed to encourage customers to become more involved with the creation of their bespoke sofas.

“The Sofa Fit”

The new ‘sofa fit’ has been designed to demonstrate all builds available to make the perfect bespoke sofa. The sofa’s arms are interchangeable so you can feel how high/wide/soft type is preferred, whilst the sofa back winds to alter the depth; they also have all cushion options to experience so the customer can decide how soft or firm they wish their sofa to be. Not forgetting that Lawson Wood Upholstery have a large selection of fabrics and links with some of the most influential fabric houses so they can offer any sofa, made in any fabric. All they need is the client to give a starting point, and they will then develop the piece together.

The showroom

As well as showing examples of bespoke furniture, the showroom also has examples of other items they design and build – scatter cushions and floor cushions, bespoke quilts made to co-ordinate with each room, headboards and ottomans and footstools.

Lawson Wood Upholstery are also very excited to team up with Martin Huxford Design, a wonderful bespoke lighting designer, and bespoke rug designers Riviere Rugs.

Martin Huxford Studio

Award-winning British designer Martin Huxford‘s individual modernist style attracts commissions from around the world. Handmade to order at Lawson Wood Upholstery’s Sussex workshop, Martin’s unique sculptural decorative lighting and furniture is a joyful exploration of the creative potential of luxury materials and great craftsmanship.

Martin’s innate understanding and love of working with brass, steel and bronze began with a childhood spent experimenting in his father’s metal workshop. An art training at Central St Martin’s London inspired Martin’s exploration of the clean beauty of abstract modernist design.

Riviere Rugs

Riviere Custom Handmade Rugs was founded in 2005 by Camilla & Leo Riviere. With backgrounds in art and design, they have a thorough understanding and appreciation of classical & modern architecture, paintings and interiors. Having also travelled extensively in Europe & Asia, their inspiration draws heavily on all these experiences.

The collection is entirely handcrafted in Riviere’s own workshop in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal. Using only the finest grade, hand-carded and hand-spun Tibetan wool and pure Chinese silk, the rugs are handwoven with a minimum of 100 knots per square inch. In addition to wool and silk, they offer a wide range of other yarns and knot counts including mohair, nettle, linen and botanic silk.

Their rugs are unique – combining craftsmanship and creativity to produce pieces that are original, beautiful and will last for generations. In an increasingly mass-produced world, they are proud to be part of a highly skilled artisan tradition.
